Defy the
Ordinary in
the Victory
of Chai.

Chai—a cultural icon in the South
Asian diaspora.

Around the 19th century the British introduced tea plantations to India with plants they acquired from China. As India started producing more high quality tea, the British exported it back to Europe and introduced tea as a medicinal beverage, mostly for the upper class.

Not surprisingly, tea was unaffordable for the people who cultivated it—the farmers back in India—so they added spices, milk and sugar to make it cheaper for locals to enjoy.

Since India’s independence from the British in 1947, tea has become a major part of India’s economy and one of the biggest symbols of South Asian culture.

Chai is a symbol of hospitality and a ritual in social connection. Passed down through generations and across geography, every home has their own recipe, a special touch that makes the recipe uniquely theirs.
